Shri Shri Bijoy Krishna Goswami Gaya Akash Ganga Pahar
Bijoy Krishna Goswami (1841-1899) was a Hindu spiritual leader, social reformer, teacher and preacher. He belonged to the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, and was a descendant (10th generation) of Advaita Acharya, who was one of the associates and teachers of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. He is known for blending devotion (bhakti), spiritual practices, and social work. For example, helping the poor, sick, preaching, etc. He studied Sanskrit, was educated in Shantipur; married; had periods when he joined movements like the Brahmo Samaj, but eventually deeply rooted in devotional (Vaishnava) paths. The Akash Ganga (Sky-Ganga) Hill is located in Gaya, Bihar. It is historically/legend-wise connected with the place where Bijoy Krishna Goswami met his Guru (spiritual preceptor) Brahmananda Paramahamsadev. According to his own accounts, in 1883 AD he journeyed to the Akash Ganga Hill in Gaya, stayed in the ashram of Raghuvar Das Baba. One day a mahatma (saint) appeared at the peak, introduced himself as his long-cherished guru, gave him initiation (mantra), after which Gosaiji fell into samadhi (deep spiritual absorption) for eleven days. After that he did sadhana there. Spiritual and Cultural Significance The episode at Akash Ganga is often cited as a turning point in his life: meeting the guru, getting initiation, and then dedicating himself more fully to the path of devotion. Bijoy Krishna Goswami is revered in the Vaishnava / Bhakti community, especially in Bengal. His life is seen as illustrating practices like Naam Kirtan (chanting the name of God), self-surrender, service, non-attachment, asceticism when needed, and compassion.
